Europan 10 local activities
April 2010

In the Europan 10 cities of Emmen, The Hague, Maastricht and Utrecht, activities are being organised together with site representatives in response to the competition. The aim is to create both internal and external support for the prize-winning designs. The follow-up to the competition is also beginning to take shape for most of the sites.

In Emmen from 29 April to 11 May 2010 a selection of the Europan 10 entries for the site, together with a number of other development projects in Emmen, were on show in the town hall. The opening of this exhibition of Emmen's "pearls", including Europan in Emmen, was on 29 April. This was followed by a discussion on the role of architecture in urban development. Please read more here.

Negotiations concerning a contract for an urban elaboration of the Europan design will shortly get under way.
In The Hague an exhibition of the Europan 10 entries for Nieuw Waldeck will be held in STROOM art and architecture centre from 18 May to 13 June 2010. In June a debate will also be organised focusing on the opportunities and problems in "bloemkoolwijken". Details about the debate will follow later on this site.

Europan 10 in Aorta, Utrecht

In Maastricht an exhibition about Europan 10 was held in the Belvédère information centre from 2 to 31 March. A debate was also planned for 2 March 2010 chaired by Frits Palmboom. Unfortunately the debate was cancelled owing to a lack of interest.

The developers of the Sphinxterrein are considering the future now that demand for house construction has slumped due to the economic crisis and the "buyers strike".

In Utrecht an exhibition on Europan 10 will be held in Aorta architecture centre from 21 April through to 29 May 2010.
On 19 May the debate "From Repetition to Variation" about the role and significance of design for spatial improvement and social regeneration in post-war districts will be held in Utrecht. Chaired by Mirjam Huffstadt (urban generation lecturer Hogeschool Utrecht), Anco Schut (head of urban development at the urban planning department, municipality of Utrecht), Ivan Nio (urban sociologist), Danny Wijnbelt (director Mitros property development), Ergün Erkoçu (architect CONCEPT0031) and Annemiek Rijckenberg (chair Europan jury). In the front seats Karin Verdooren, director of Mitros housing and, circumstances permitting, Harrie Bosch (alderman, Spatial Planning).
