In-between Cities, Architectural Dynamics and New Urbanity |
|
Located between the town centre (consolidated town) and the extended modern town (large housing estates, contemporary housing developments) one can find neglected urban fragments. European towns are themselves made up of several towns. For the most part they have a stable urban centre with a heritage value, born of urban development that went on through to the middle of the 20th century. They also have modern areas, the fruit of the 19860s to 1980s, zoning, forming juxtaposed urban fragments, or scattered in the middle of networks - estates of large blocks of flats, clusters of individual houses, business/industrial zones, new towns, etc. Included in this patchwork are also older urban areas whose origins go back to the 18th, 19th and first half of the 20th centuries, when the centre extended outside the "city limits". On the original structuring network, the constructed elements have developed gradually in line with needs, giving birth to a multiplicity of spaces that are a mix of high-rise urban flats, rows of housing giving onto the street, individual houses, industrial premises, warehousing, contemporary transport, routes, etc. Jury - Michael van Gessel, Ruurd Gietema, Peter van der Gugten, Madeleine Maaskant, Don Murphy, Wytze Patijn, Annemieke Rijckenberg, Paul Schnabel, Yorgos Simeoforidis, Huub Smeets. |

Amsterdam-Noord Elzenhage - In the green, recreational area an urban living-working area is planned, within the framework of the regeneration of the central area. According to the Urban Programme of Requirements, on the site a varied development image should be realised through variety in height and through fine-grained land allocation. A clear separation between public and private space will be aimed for. Apeldoorn Veldhuis - The site, being an out-dated industrial area with a mix of housing, activity, education, amenities and large-scale retail trade, should be restructured. The plans should form the "link" between the adjacent restructuring operations. The charm of the site, where many things are possible, should not be destroyed through "over direction". Groningen Oosterhamrik - The site, situated along the Van Starkenborghkanaal and on both sides of the Oosterhamrikkanaal, is a transition area between two housing districts dating back to the thirties. Intervention on the site should not only restore the relation between the housing districts; the site should also serve as a "front" of these districts, with a programme of small-scale businesses and a differentiated urban living environment. Rotterdam-Hoogvliet - The study area is situated on a transition between a residential area and the green zone along the A15 motorway, which form the north border of the district. On the intervention area, situated in the east part of the study area, a programme of living and working has to be realised, in particular a combination of both functions in housing-working units. Lelystad Visarenddreef - Changing the character of the road, whereby the connecting route is given a different significance, should lead to the desired cultural, social and economic connection. The adjacent "residential islands", accessible from the Visarenddreef, should also be connected. |
