Europan 03 (1993 - 1994)
At Home in the City, Urbanisation of Residential Areas
In a large number of European towns and conurbations, districts where people live are suffering from spatial, functional and social uniformity. Management of space and standardised production methods have led to ruptures which accentuate the polarisations between the public space and the private space. These do not facilitate the diversity of lifestyles and living, and are hardly propitious to the reorganisation of spare-time activities and to the multiple and to the communal appropriations of the town's spaces.
The use of communications technology and the fragmentations of urban spaces modifies the notion of spatial distance and proximity; the social relationships are no longer drawn exclusively from life in the immediate vicinity, or the domestic circle, they have enlarged to the scale of the town. It is a case of making possible a variation of sociabilities and cultures, favouring the establishment in space of innovative practices, treating the mixity of uses, the home/work relationship, and the ways and means of creating employment locally.

Participating sites
Den Bosch Grobbendonck
Clasped between a busy traffic artery and the pond De IJzeren Vrouw, is the competition site with a covered swimming pool, a sports hall and paying grounds. The Prins Hendrik park is situated along the pool. After moving the present facilities, space is available for housing. Re-use of the sports accommodation could be one of the possibilities.
Dordrecht Noordendijk
The intervention site is situated along the Noordendijk, on the north-eastern side of the town, but the study area includes the district between the Noordendijk and the river het Wantij. The programme mentions a combination of high quality housing, tourism, leisure and culture. On the intervention site new building should take shape in the form of a dike environment.
Groningen Circusterrein
The site is situated in an empty area which is used almost exclusively for parking. Its position with regard to the city centre, sited on the former seventeenth century fortification, makes the area suitable for housing on the one hand and retailing and services on the other. High, urban densities should not be ruled out and of the presence of many facilities makes housing for the elderly possible.
Haarlem Koningstein
Close to the neighbourhood of the Rozenprieel, the site is situated, within walking distance of the inner city. Among other things, there used to be a chemical laundry. The new buildings must make an important contribution to the entire neighbourhood. Themes such as public-private, high-low, old-new and open-closed must be borne in mind in the design. The programme contents housing, and at the edges of the intervention site attention is required for the integration of housing and work.
